Zariel is a fallen angel and the archdevil ruler of Avernus,[1] the first layer of the Nine Hells.
She invaded Avernus, was defeated, and now rules there, corrupt and wicked.

Involvement[edit section | visual editor]

While Zariel cannot be encountered in the game, the party typically must deal with her servants MizoraMizora, CirrusCirrus, FeenaFeena, and AndersAnders because KarlachKarlach was one of Zariel's prized soldiers, and is now hunted by Zariel's henchmen. Zariel and her history are also mentioned in several books and notes throughout the game.

Tieflings of her bloodline, the Zariel tieflings, are empowered with martial strength and can channel searing flames.

When Zariel was still a celestial, she was tasked with monitoring the Blood WarBlood War. She took it upon herself to take action and led an unsuccessful invasion of Avernus. She was defeated and corrupted into becoming an archdevil by Asmodeus.[2] She is credited with killing a horde of Yeenoghu's gnolls.[3]

  • Zariel is the main antagonist of the game's prequel D&D adventure Baldur's Gate: Descent into AvernusBaldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus. The adventure takes place a short time prior to the beginning of Baldur's Gate 3.
  • The pronunciation guide provided with Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus gives two pronunciations for Zariel's name, "ZAR-ee-el" and "ZAIR-ee-el". The former is used throughout Baldur's Gate 3.
