Throw is a common Action which allows the user to throw certain Weapons, Consumables, environmental objects, and even other creatures.

Description

Throw a character or item from the world or your inventory.

Your Strength affects how much weight you can throw. Heavier items deal more damage.

The damage of weapons with the thrown property is the same as the weapon's melee damage.

Ranged Unarmed Attack Roll Ranged Unarmed Attack Roll
Range: 18 m (60 ft) Range: 18 m (60 ft)

The range depends on the weight of the object, see below. Range for picking up objects from the ground is AoE: 1 m (3 ft) Radius AoE: 1 m (3 ft) Radius

  • Damage:
    • For weapons with the Thrown Thrown property, the damage and damage type are the same as the weapon's melee damage.
    • For other objects and creatures, damage is determined by the weight[1] of the object being thrown:
      • Light objects, under Weight: 10 kg (20 lb) Weight: 10 kg (20 lb):
        1BludgeoningBludgeoning damage
      • Medium objects, Weight: 10 kg (20 lb) Weight: 10 kg (20 lb) - 50 kg / 100 lb:
        1d4BludgeoningBludgeoning damage
      • Heavy objects, over Weight: 50 kg (100 lb) Weight: 50 kg (100 lb):
        2d4BludgeoningBludgeoning damage
  • If the thrown object or creature is over half the target's weight, the target is knocked back 2 m (7 ft).[1]
  • If the thrown object or creature is heavier than the target, the target becomes Prone Prone (no saving throw).[1]
  • A thrown creature always lands Prone Prone (no saving throw).
  • Throwing a creature requires a successful Athletics check, using the same DC as when shoving a creature, except the check is not made at advantage when hidden.

Range

The range of the Throw attack depends on the object's weight in kilograms and the thrower's Strength ability, according to the following formula:[2]

round(3+15⋅15⋅Strength2−Weight2⋅Weight)

The formula's output is adjusted to 3 meters if it would have been lower and 18 meters if it would have been higher.

Notes

  • Throw is an explicitly defined action with an exhaustive list of interactions in the game's code. Throw is its own type of action, separate from weapon attacks, even when used with Thrown Thrown weapons. Weapon actions are explicitly defined to work with weapon attacks, and so cannot be used with Throw. Another major consequence of this is that thrown weapons do not trigger most 'on-hit' passives, except for those mentioned below. In addition, thrown weapons do not apply any innate extra damage (e.g., the 1d4RadiantRadiant damage from the  Shining Staver-of-Skulls) or any damage from coatings or dipping.
    • The following interactions are explicitly coded to work with Throw:
      •  Slinging Shoes deal an additional 2d4PsychicPsychic damage when thrown, even on a miss.
      •  Nyrulna deals 3d4ThunderThunder damage in a 6 m (20 ft)6 m (20 ft) blast when thrown, even on a miss.
      •  Lightning Jabber deals an additional 1d4LightningLightning damage when thrown, even on a miss.
      • Boo Boo can Blind Blind a target that fails a DC 15 Dexterity Saving Throw DC 15 Dexterity Saving Throw when thrown, though the duration lasts for less than one full combat round, ending at the start of the Blinded target's turn.
      • A dwarf throwing the  Dwarven Thrower deals an additional 1d8BludgeoningBludgeoning damage to targets of Medium size or smaller. For targets larger than Medium, this damage increases to 2d8BludgeoningBludgeoning.
      • Creatures marked with Hunter's Mark Hunter's Mark take an additional 1d6WeaponWeapon damage when hit by a thrown weapon from the spell's caster.
      • All variants of Elemental Cleaver Elemental Cleaver infuse a weapon so that it deals an additional 1d6 of the chosen elemental damage type when thrown.
      • Throwing a Burning Burning object at a target sets the thrower on fire, even on a miss. However, this does not occur if the thrown object impacts only the ground.
    • The  Ring of Flinging and  Gloves of Uninhibited Kushigo provide an additional 1d4WeaponWeapon damage to all Throw attacks.
    • Any boosts to weapon damage that do not check for melee or weapon attack rolls are applied to thrown weapon attacks. Examples include the  Caustic Band,  Helldusk Gloves, Rage Rage, Crusader's Mantle Crusader's Mantle, etc.
  • A creature can throw items and other creatures weighing up to 0.2⋅STR2 kg.[3] For example, with a Strength score of 18, the weight limit for Throw is 64.8 kg (129.6 lb).
    • It requires a Strength of at least 20 to pick up a Medium humanoid (75 kg (150 lb)).
  • Throw triggers Extra Attack Extra Attack and can be used without an  Action after triggering Extra Attack.
  • Berserker Barbarians have the improved throwing ability Enraged Throw Enraged Throw.
  • The Tavern Brawler Tavern Brawler feat significantly improves throwing damage.
  • Throw can trigger a Sneak Attack Sneak Attack reaction when using weapons with the Finesse Finesse property. The damage type is that of the ranged weapon equipped in the main hand (usually PiercingPiercing). It does not trigger if no ranged weapon is equipped.
  • Thrown objects and creatures take falling damage (and can inflict crushing damage) if thrown from a sufficient height.
  • Bound Weapon Bound Weapons return to their wielder when thrown, but do not receive the Thrown property if they do not already have it.
  • Throwing a homing weapon or Bound Weapon from a character's inventory causes them to equip it to their main hand without expending an action.

Bugs

  • A creature killed by a Thrown weapon on high ground may not grant experience upon their death if they do not die from the Throw attack itself, but instead from the crushing damage of the weapon falling; in this case, the game treats the killed target as if they were killed by a neutral entity rather than the attacker.
    • This also applies to thrown  Torchs.
