Overview[edit | edit source]
The Facemaker Boutique is a fashion house located in the Steeps district of Baldur's Gate, adjacent to The Glitter Gala. It stands close to the Upper City Gate Checkpoint and thus attracts clientele not only from the nearest quarters, but from the Upper City as well. The fashion house is a large two-storied building with a basement and the only entrance at X: -181 Y: -31.
The establishment is owned and run by Figaro Pennygood, who inherited the business from his father Julio Facemaker. Figaro is the brother of Carmen Pennygood, the owner of Carm's Garms in Wyrm's Crossing. The siblings are at odds with each other; both consider the other a diletante and lame in fashion matters.
As Figaro Pennygood has been marked as a quarry for a serial killer, the actual state of the building depends on the state and (if started) progress of the party's involvement in the Investigate the Murders and Impress the Murder Tribunal quests (see Involvement section below).
Building layout[edit | edit source]

Ground floor[edit | edit source]
The boutique's entrance is on the ground floor and leads to a large shopping room where Bobula Hanvers and Phlanders Hort are working as staff. Phlanders stands behind the counter and carries the Facemaker Fashion Basement Key. On the bottom shelves of the counter is a Gold Key which can be used to unlock a chest filled with dyes near the front window. The inlocked wicker chest behind the counter contains gold and alchemical ingredients.
On the surrounding shelves are multiple pieces of Camp Clothing from Rich to Aristocrat grades, as well as various headwear and shoes.
To the south of the front room is a smaller room with stairs leading to the first floor as well as a hatch to the basement.
To the sides of the counter are two double doors, both leading to the back area of the shop. Inside is a large salesroom, it contains more shelves with clothes, and a smaller dais with several barber's chairs and large mirrors for hairdressing services in its southern part. Multiple cabinets, bottle racks and bloodbanks here contain small amounts of gold and bottles with random dyes.
An opulent chest at X: -172 Y: -36 and a wicker chest at X: -169 Y: -46 both unlocked and red-outlined, contain gold and random arrows.
If Figaro survives throughout the Investigate the Murders quest, or it was never started, he acts as a trader, selling a vast assortment of Camp Clothing and dyes of various grades, including Very rare ones.
Obtaining a new piece of clothing from Figaro's stock awards one or more of the following inspirations:
- Extravagance Required ( Guild Artisan background)
- Threads of Fame ( Entertainer background)
- Updating Your Wardrobe ( Noble background)
All these inspirations can be obtained only if the party member purchases a piece of clothing from Figaro himself. Trading with Phlanders Hort if Figaro dies does not grant any of them.
Also, if Figaro is saved, his attitude towards the player character raises up to 100, which allows characters with the Guild Artisan background earn the Valued Customer inspiration as well without any further efforts, if it was not obtained earlier.
First floor[edit | edit source]
Following the stairs up from the side room next to the entrance leads to a locked door, opened with a DC 20 Sleight of Hand Check. Through the door are the living room and the bedroom. Both have several containers with mostly miscellaneous loot:
- At X: -162 Y: -38 two Traveller's Chest with gold and random potions
- At X: -168 Y: -39 wicker chest with random minor loot
- At X: -178 Y: -40 opulent chest with gold and alchemical ingredients
In the bedroom is an empty strongbox in the wall which can be opened with Figaro's Safe Key. On a desk in the bedroom is another of Figaro's Chest Keys.[1] Next to these rooms, a large balcony can be reached from the hall.
Basement[edit | edit source]

The basement can be accessed through a locked, red-outlined hatch near the stairs to the first floor, opened by lockpicking (requires DC 20 Sleight of Hand Check) or with the Facemaker Fashion Basement Key, carried by Phlanders Hort.
The basement consists of several rooms connected together: a storehouse, a small lab where Figaro made experiments to invent a new type of dye, and a makeshift office.
In the office is a desk with the The Last Will and Testament of Julio Facemaker and a Forgery Kit on it. [2] On this same desk is small locked Gilded Chest which can be unlocked by using Figaro's Chest Key, obtained from the Stack of Scrolls at X: -2343 Y: 1294.
Another large Opulent chest stands at X: -2342 Y: 1302. It is locked and trapped, requiring DC 20 Perception Check to detect the trap, DC 15 Sleight of Hand Check to disarm it, and DC 20 Sleight of Hand Check to lockpick. It can though be opened with Figaro's Chest Key from the bedroom on the first floor. Inside, however, are only two random sets of Camp clothing of patriar grade.
Another wooden chest ( DC 15 Sleight of Hand Check to lockpick) contains gold and random potions.
At X: -2334 Y: 1294 a Sturdy destroyable wall can be spotted. Behind it is a Blast Mine and a locked Wooden Chest (requires DC 15 Sleight of Hand Check to lockpick), containing some gold, ingots and alchemy ingredients.
Involvement[edit | edit source]
If the party started the Investigate the Murders and Impress the Murder Tribunal quests, and the serial killer Dolor survives and escapes from the Wine Festival at Highberry's Home, he moves to the Facemaker's Boutique to the next victim in his list - Figaro.
In this case, neither of Figaro's employees are present inside. Instead, in the front room are two NPCs with signature "doppelganger" names (three more are in the backroom with Dolor). Upon opening any of the double doors the cutscene starts, where Dolor kills Figaro if the party do not interfere. If they do, a fight starts. Devella Fountainhead is also there, already paralysed by the murderers.[3]
Unlike the plot branch at the Highberry's Home, the encounter with Dolor at Figaro's waits to be triggered and resolved even after a long rest. When the dialogue triggers, the interacting character has an option to sneak back to the shadows, but this does not prevent the fight.[4]
After the encounter with the murder attempt is resolved, Figaro's employees appear in the building. If Figaro died, Phlanders Hort takes his place as a trader. Trading with him offers a smaller stock than Figaro's and does not bring the aforementioned inspirations.
If neither quest is active, Dolor is not present, and Figaro simply acts as a trader.
Outside the building[edit | edit source]
- If the previous murder attempt by Dolor was interrupted, and he managed to escape, there will be several clients of Figaro's, Hannaah Befling, Varce Humbletood, and Kale Dorriacks waiting their turn outside the entrance, all of them disappointed with the time they have to wait.[5]
- When exploring Szarr Palace, the party can find the diary of Leon Onufrio, one of the vampire spawn dwelling there, who wanted Figaro's services to ensure the safety of his little daughter Victoria. Unfortunately, his plan never came to fruition.

- ↑ A copy of this key is carried by Bobula Hanvers.
- ↑ The contents of the "Last will..." and the forgery kit nearby, as well as an abrasive relationship between brother and sister Pennygoods may possibly imply to an intended – but never implemented – side questline of unearthing the true order of inheritance between these two after their father.
- ↑ If the fight starts, Devella becomes the first target of the doppelgangers. If she survives, dialogue with her starts automatically, the layout of which depends on whether the party have already met her in the Elfsong Tavern. If they did not, all interactions and approval points are available here.
- ↑ If hiding succeeds, Dolor and his doppelganger assistants attack the rest of the party. If the interacting character is separated from the party and successfully hides from Dolor, the murderous squad remains in the building after killing Figaro and Devella and waits for the party to find them there.
- ↑ While the first two NPCs can be seen only in front of the doors, Kale Dorriacks – due to some glitches – may wander around the street and nearby locations, and can be seen, for example, on the first floor of the Lodge, in the Grey Harbour Docks, and even as far as the Water Queen's House. Nevertheless, her one-liner dialogue suggests that she is yet another tired-of-waiting client of Figaro's.
