Avenge the Drowned

Avenge the Drowned is a quest in Act Three of Baldur's Gate 3. It is started by speaking with Allandra Grey in the Lower City.

“You. You were to administer Umberlee's justice! Instead you conspire with the Abomination? He who sickened the harbour with blood so black the sea itself chokes?„

Walkthrough[edit section | visual editor]
Holli's Funeral[edit section | visual editor]
Upon entering the Water Queen's House, Untaken Diomira Trellis asks the party if they are there for the funeral. She proclaims all are welcome to celebrate the life of the waveservant Holli Dylford, who died while swimming in Grey Harbour. Moving further into the temple, a group of waveservants are singing around Holli's corpse at X: -229 Y: -261 while Allandra Grey, the Flood Tide of the temple, gives her the last rites.
If a party member speaks with Allandra, she explains more on how Holli died, and asks what they have brought to the funeral. If the party has not yet visited the Iron Throne, they can say they have brought prayers, their sword to avenge Holli, or gold. Afterward, Allandra seeks the party's help in finding Holli's killer. She has little information other than the general location of Holli's death and the appearance of "black blood". See below if the party already visited the Iron Throne for an alternate way to get the quest reward even though this quest is unavailable.
Holli's corpse can be communed with using Speak with Dead, although her answers are somewhat limited:
- Who are you?
- Holli Dylford
- Holli... Dylford... I serve... Umberlee...
- What happened to you?
- Holli Dylford
- I was... swimming... I was... attacked...
- Do you remember what happened before you were attacked?
- Holli Dylford
- Just... black blood... everywhere...
- What killed you?
- Holli Dylford
- Metal... monster...
- Tell me about this metal monster.
- Holli Dylford
- Big... fast... hit my head... everything went... black...
- Where were you attacked?
- Holli Dylford
- I was... swimming... in Grey Harbour...
Questioning the Fishermen[edit section | visual editor]
Within Grey Harbour are two fishermen who witnessed Holli's death. Gowlan and Fleer are on the docks north of the Water Queen's House, right beside the Grey Harbour Docks waypoint, at X: -213 Y: -155. At first, Gowlan asks the interacting party member if they know how to remove oil from wood. Regardless of the option chosen, he asks if they need anything:
- I'm looking into the death of a waveservant - do you know anything about it?
- Where did all this stuff come from anyway?
- Why are there so many dead fish floating in the harbour?
- Is your boat all right?
If the first or second option are chosen, Gowlan tells the party member how they were hauling in their nets expecting a load of halibut, when they spotted the waveservant.
- What happened to her body?
- Did you see anything else unusual?
After picking the second option, Gowlan mentions he saw something in the water that seemed to approach Flymm Cargo.
Flymm Cargo[edit section | visual editor]

Flymm Cargo is further along the docks. The double metal doors at X: -169 Y: -150 can be lockpicked ( DC 20 Sleight of Hand Check), and cause several Worgs within to attack. After defeating them the party can enter the basement via a hatch at X: -164 Y: -141. The entrance is covered by various trunks and crates which can be moved or destroyed to more easily access it.
Deep within the basement of Flymm Cargo and past the machine parts storage room is an area with a submersible and Redhammer nearby. In the corner of the room at X: -1021 Y: 294 is Redhammer's Journal, which can further explain his motivations and involvement in the goings on of Flymm Cargo.
Confronting Redhammer[edit section | visual editor]

Finally, a party member can speak with Redhammer to get to the bottom of what happened. After he asks what they are doing here, the conversing party member can accuse him of killing one of the servants of Umberlee:
- You killed one of those servants of Umberlee. Now they want you dead.
- It seems you and 'Cap' killed a servant of Umberlee on one of your latest runs. Now they want you dead.
Redhammer asks if they are here to make good on it, in which case they can respond:
- Depends. Tell me everything you know about the Iron Throne.
- I'll make you a deal - take me to the Iron Throne, and I'll protect you from Umberlee's servants.
- If you take me to the Iron Throne, I could 'forget' I saw you.
- You're going to take me to the Iron Throne - I'm getting the prisoners out.
- You're as guilty as the people who imprisoned the Gondians. (begins combat)
- You killed someone. You need to face justice. (begins combat)
If one of the first three options is chosen, Redhammer takes the party to the Iron Throne. Otherwise, he becomes hostile. If he is killed, the party can still pilot the submersible to the Iron Throne themselves by interacting with the top hatch.
Waveservants,[4] led by Allandra Grey, arrive if the party chooses to go to the Iron Throne with Redhammer. They demand Redhammer come with them to face his consequences. The party can either hand him over or refuse, which starts a fight against all the waveservants. Siding with Redhammer first means losing out on the Wavemother's Robe given by Allandra. However, she can be defeated and looted immediately after releasing Redhammer to her custody to obtain both the robe and Wavemother's Sickle, a rare weapon. In this case, Redhammer allies with the party.
If Redhammer is killed before traveling to the Iron Throne, Allandra Grey arrives and demands to know who is responsible for the "black blood" tainting the bay. The available responses are:
- I was trying to save hostages from an underwater prison. But I failed. They're all dead. (if all hostages died)
- I saved these hostages from an underwater prison. No harm to the sea was intended. (if one survived)
- Yes - the Iron Throne is gone because of me. It will taint your waters no longer.
- I don't answer to you
If the second option is chosen Allandra rewards the party with the Wavemother's Robe and leaves satisfied.
The party visited the Iron Throne before speaking with Allandra[edit section | visual editor]
If the party visited the Iron Throne prior to speaking with Allandra the first time, the response that the party brought their sword to avenge Holli is not available, and Allandra does not give this quest. It is still possible to receive the Wavemother's Robe from Allandra in this case by following these steps: after completing the Iron Throne but before speaking to Allandra the first time, kill Redhammer. Then speak to Allandra, and respond with having brought nothing at all. Put 10 gold in the Water Queen's Offerings Chest and speak to Allandra again. She then tells the player character they are as changeable as the sea. The character will be shown as if to give a response but no options will be given. Press the spacebar or continue button on one's controller, and the option to tell Allandra the Beastmaster is dead becomes available. She thanks the party and gives the Wavemother's Robe.
Rewards[edit section | visual editor]
- - if the party sides with the Umberlees and kills Redhammer or hands him over to them.
- If the party sides with Redhammer, he gives them 332 gold.

- ↑ This quest intersects heavily with Save the Gondians and Disable the Steel Watch. It is recommended to pick this quest up before finishing them, as Allandra may not offer it at all if the Gondians are already rescued from the Iron Throne.
- ↑ If Gortash is defeated before completing this quest, Redhammer flees the city with the submersible, leaving the Iron Throne and all inhabitants to perish.
Bugs[edit section | visual editor]
- If Redhammer is handed over to the Umberlees the quest is completed with the journal saying that he was surrendered. However it is not updated to reflect the new state of affairs if the party attacks and kills the Umberlees afterwards. By doing the above, Redhammer's monetary reward is not granted despite him saying so.
