Find the Missing Letters is a quest in Act Three of Baldur's Gate 3. It can be started by speaking with Danzo Arkwright Danzo Arkwright at Sword Coast Couriers.

“
State your purpose, ground-walker, I don't have all day.
„
— Commander Lightfeather, admonishing the player character after his introduction.

Objectives[edit section | visual editor]

Search for the missing pigeons.
  • Carrier pigeons have gone missing. Postmaster Danzo asked us to retrieve the letters they carried. He said that if we find the letters, we shouldn't read them.
Investigate the Open Hand Temple roof.
  • We found the bloody remains of several pigeons on the roof. The trail seems to lead towards the Open Hand Temple roof.
  • We spoke to a pigeon in the pigeon coop. He claims other carrier pigeons have been intercepted by an unknown enemy to the west of the posthouse. He warned us - 'beware the sign of the featherless wings.'
Investigate the tressym nest.
  • The tressym flew away - leaving behind a pigeon carcass, and the missing letters.
Return the letters to the Postmaster.
  • We have the missing letters. Postmaster Danzo will be pleased.
Quest Complete
  • We returned the missing letters to Postmaster Danzo.

  • Postmaster Danzo was killed.
  • We moved on without helping Postmaster Danzo.

Speaking with Danzo[edit section | visual editor]

Postmaster Danzo at Sword Coast Couriers

Speaking to Postmaster Arkwright at Sword Coast Couriers at X: 13 Y: 10 initiates a conversation about mail not being guaranteed.

[1]
  • Wait - delivery not guaranteed?
  • I'm not sending anything. You can drop the sales routine.
  • It's rare to meet someone so cheerful these days. Why the good mood?

If the first option is selected, Danzo explains that his pigeon couriers have gone missing and he has only found their remains. Several letters still are missing.

[1]
  • Any idea where the birds went missing?
  • I could find the pigeons for you. My fees are very reasonable.
  • I'd be happy to take a look.
  • Good luck with that. I've got bigger problems to solve.

If agreeing to search for the missing pigeons, Danzo mentions that he will pay a finder's fee for any unopened letters which are returned to him.

The pigeon fleet[edit section | visual editor]

Using Speak with Animals Speak with Animals, the surviving pigeons can be spoken to for information. They are on the upper level of the back room of the Posthouse at X: 27 Y: 14. The "leader" of the pigeons, Commander Lightfeather Commander Lightfeather, tells the party that intelligence on the source of the missing comrades is in short supply, but that their enemies flanked them "on the west side, not one rooftop away."

Speaking with Commander Lightfeather grants the following inspiration:

Confronting the pigeon-killer[edit section | visual editor]

Tara the Tressym hungers for pigeons.

The culprit lurks on the rooftop of the Open Hand Temple. The party must go to the kitchen and exit outside via the north door, then head east and around the building, where there are vines that allow roof access at X: -50 Y: 11. Alternately, a character with Flight Flight, sufficiently high jump distance, or a teleportation spell such as Dimension Door Dimension Door can get onto the roof directly from outside.

The culprit, a Tressym, is at X: -45 Y: -4 in a nest of pigeon remains. The  Bundle of Letters is on the ground nearby. She can be attacked and killed, with the  Ring of Blink and  Tressym Collar looted from her body.

Alternately, the party can approach her. A successful Perception check notes that this Tressym has a collar with Gale's Gale's name, revealing her identity as his friend, Tara Tara. If Gale is in the party, he instantly recognizes Tara. Choosing to ask Gale to have her not to eat any more pigeons causes Tara to fly away, without any checks necessary.

If Gale is not in the party, then Tara can still be interacted with, starting with a passive DC 15 Perception Check DC 15 Perception Check to notice the Ring of Blink and Bundle of Letters in the nest.

[2]
  • [ACROBATICS] Lunge for the shiny ring. (DC 20) (if Perception check succeeded)
  • [ANIMAL HANDLING] Gently approach the tressym and attempt to take the ring without alarming her. (DC 15) (if Perception check or "Try to discern the nature of the creature's ill temper" Animal Handling check succeeded)
  • [ANIMAL HANDLING] Try to discern the nature of the creature's ill temper. (DC 15) (if Perception check failed)
  • [PERFORMANCE] BOOGABOOGA! (DC 15)
  • Pet the tressym.

Successfully passing any of the checks gains the Ring of Blink. Regardless of whether the check is passed, Tara flies away and leaves the letters behind.

Alternately, one party member can keep Tara occupied in a conversation while another runs up and grabs the letters. This enrages her and causes her to spit a fireball before flying off.

If Speak with Animals Speak with Animals is active, but the passive Perception to notice the letters is failed, then Tara denies having anything to do with the fallen pigeons. The following options are present:

[2]
  • [INTIMIDATION] Are you sure? I'd hate for anything abrupt to happen while I'm seeking out the culprit. (DC 15)
  • [PERSUASION] I'll happily leave you be, as soon as I find out what happened to those pigeons. (DC 15)
  • [DECEPTION] I've been sent here to take you in for questioning. You can avoid an unpleasant trip inside if you tell me the truth now. (DC 15)

If this check is failed, then Tara becomes enraged and spits a fireball, in this case also destroying the letters.

If the passive Perception or one of the dialogue checks is passed, then Tara admits to her crimes. The party can respond with:

[2]
  • Those letters are important. You shouldn't be eating their messengers.
  • If pigeon is your second-favourite, what's your first?
  • Happy hunting, then.

Choosing "Happy hunting, then" has Tara flying away, albeit still posing a threat to any future pigeons. The other options lead to a second choice of checks to convince her to leave the carriers alone:

[2]
  • [INTIMIDATION] Leave these pigeons alone or I'll eat you. (DC 15)
  • [PERSUASION] I'm not leaving 'til you agree to stop hunting these pigeons. (DC 15)
  • [DECEPTION] There's a much better aviary across town, if you've already picked over the choice cuts here. (DC 15)
  • Enjoy your feast.

Choosing "Enjoy your feast" once again makes Tara leave without any promises. Passing the check has her promise to stop hunting the neighbourhood pigeons. Either way, she flies off and the party can pick up the letters. If this check is failed, she once again spits a fireball and destroys the letters.

Gaining the letters by any means grants the following inspiration:

Reading the letters[edit section | visual editor]

After picking up the bundle of letters, they can either be returned intact, or opened to read.

Opening the bundle reveals three letters:  Postmaster Shipment Enquiry,  Anonymous letter, and  Letter about Taxes. The Postmaster Shipment Inquiry reveals that Danzo is corresponding with Roah Moonglow Roah Moonglow and warning her about the  Iron Flask, involving him in Zhentarim activities.

Danzo's Fate[edit section | visual editor]

After reading the letters, there are only three dialogue options:

[1]
  • I found the letter intended for the Zhentarim. It made for very interesting reading.
  • [PERSUASION] I found the letter, but it was very difficult. I'm afraid my fees have gone up. (DC 18)
  • Nothing yet. I'll keep looking.
  • Leave

Danzo attempts to bribe the party into silence. The party can agree to the bribe or attempt to get more out of him:

[1]
  • [DECEPTION] I've got another buyer lined up. I'd make it a very generous fee. (DC 18)
  • [INTIMIDATION] Give me everything the Zhentarim paid you, or this letter if the least of your worries. (DC 18)
  • [PERSUASION] It'd be a shame if anyone told the Zhentarim you lost this. A real shame... (DC 18)
  • I graciously accept.
  • No, thanks. I'm keeping the letter.

If the party only opened the bundle and did not read them, the check to bluff is slightly higher (20) than if they have read them. If the check is failed, Danzo turns aggressive and attacks the party, stating that the letters will not leave the room. If the party say they will keep the letters, then he tells them to get out of his sight and that he will no longer deal with them.

If the letters are not read, there are the following options:

[1]
  • Is this the letter you were looking for?
  • [PERSUASION] I found the letter, but it was very difficult. I'm afraid my fees have gone up. (DC 18)
  • Nothing yet. I'll keep looking.

However, even with a successful Persuasion roll, the payout remains the same.

Rewards[edit section | visual editor]

  • If the letters are unopened: 320 gold
  • If the letters are read and Danzo is blackmailed into paying more: 640 gold
