That Which Guards is a death knight guarding the entrance to the Hall of The Murder Tribunal, located in Bhaalist Crypt.

“
Present me well from gifts thine own,
Or I shall rend thy flesh from bone.
„
— That Which Guards, prompting the party to present its Bhaalist trophies

Involvement[edit section | visual editor]

Together with That Which Lurks That Which Lurks and That Which Watches That Which Watches, That Which Guards stands before the entrance to the main hall of the Murder Tribunal. He must be presented a Bhaalist trophy, the  Hand Bag from Dolor Dolor[1] in order to gain access.

Only the first dialogue option will grant access, all other options will lead to a fight with the guards:

[2]
  • I killed to be here - and took the victim's hand as proof (If trophy has been obtained)
  • I offer myself.
  • I've got several powerful magic artefacts you can take.
  • How about some gold? I've got plenty.
  • Player: I care not for what you seek. Stand aside.
  • [DARK URGE] I offer myself. There is no finer offering than the poison fruit of Bhaal's loins.
  • [DARK URGE] Clearly, you seek me, the scion of Bhaal himself.
  • [DARK URGE] I can't rend your flesh, but I can dent your metal.
  • [DARK URGE] Ugh. Father's servants are such a bore. Let me through (No trophy has been obtained yet)

If no trophy has been obtained yet, there is also the possibility to back out of the conversation, although this requires a dialogue check to succeed:

[2]
  • [PERSUASION] I don't want to give you the wrong answer. Can I have some time to think? (DC 18)
  • [BARD] [PERFORMANCE] Grant unto me a touch more time / To ponder on your cunning rhyme. (DC 18 Advantage Icon.png)
  • [DARK URGE] [PERFORMANCE] I am preparing a triumphant offering, grant me more time to make it glorious. (DC 18 Advantage Icon.png)

There is also a rare scenario possible in which Dolor Dolor shows up at the door. The conditions to achieve this are listed on the quest description page.

That Which Guards demands a duel between the two contenders and Dolor happily obliges. The party can choose to fight Dolor to the death, or either tell him to go ahead to the Murder Tribunal or persuade him to destroy it altogether. Only in the case of a duel with Dolor does That Which Guards stay neutral, otherwise a fight will start.
