Potions

From bg3.wiki
(Redirected from Ethel's special potions)
Jump to navigation Jump to search
This page is about consumable items listed as Potions on the Alchemy tab. For a list of weapon coatings, see Coatings. For a list of Elixirs, see Elixirs. For a full list of liquid consumables, see Alchemy.

Potions are Consumables that can restore Hit Points, cure Conditions, or to grant a variety of other effects when consumed (or, in some cases, applied after being thrown). These effects can range from gaining extra actions in combat, speaking to animals, or even gaining the benefit of Long Rest without resting.

Potions can be looted, bought from vendors, or crafted with the Alchemy system.

How potions work[edit section | visual editor]

  • Potions can be consumed using a  Bonus Action to grant an effect to a single creature.
  • While all potions can be thrown using the Throw Throw action, only some are able to apply the potion's effect on multiple creatures. Other potions simply have no effect if used in such a manner. Unlike Coatings and some Elixirs, the effects of Potions do not lose any effectiveness when thrown.
  • While most potions grant beneficial effects, certain potions inflict negative status effects and are more useful when used as Grenades instead of being consumed (e.g.,  Potions of sleep).

Hag's potions[edit section | visual editor]

These potions are at the end of the Overgrown TunnelOvergrown Tunnel in the Acrid Workshop in Act One. Some are also in her lair under the Blushing MermaidBlushing Mermaid in Act Three. Unlike other potions, most of these do not have positive effects. While they primarily exist as background flavour for Auntie Ethel Auntie Ethel and their related actions, they may also be useful when utilized judiciously for certain battles (e.g., bosses).

Aside from the effects listed in their in-game descriptions, these all have unlisted negative/positive effects (see individual wiki pages for details).

Although Ethel's potions can be thrown, none of them impart their effects to their targets when thrown.

Drugs[edit section | visual editor]

These are consumables which cannot be thrown. Their function seems to imitate that of drug-like substances for roleplay purposes, as it is also implied by their game files naming these items 'Drugs'. While they can be found at certain locations in the game, they are only sold by Severn Severn, regardless of any party member's level.

Potions that were once available in previous versions of the game or are able to be spawned using 3rd party tools.

Terminology note[edit section | visual editor]

The term Potion is used in-game as a general category of liquid consumables inclusive of Potions, Coatings, and Elixirs, highlighted on tooltips. It is also used specifically as a category for crafting with Alchemy. For this page, the specific category is used. For a full list of liquid consumables, see the Alchemy page.
